Dera Sacha Sauda – An Inspiring Picture of Humanity

Dera Sacha Sauda, a registered NGO, established on April 29, 1948, is an Indian religious non-profit social welfare organization. It was established as a centre for religious learning by Mastana Balochistani, a follower of Baba Sawan Singh (Satguru of Radha Soami Satsang). The movement started by Mastana Balochistani was split into three groups after his death. Satnam Singh was leading the Sirsa group, who later selected Gurmeet Ram Rahim to be his successor. The main centre of Dera Sacha Sauda is situated in Sirsa, Haryana (India) having 46 ashrams all over the world.

Mastana Balochistani established various ashrams mainly in Aryana, Punjab and Rajasthan, where ‘Naam’ method of meditation was taught to followers who accepted and follow three principles throughout their life – No consumption of meat, egg or gelatin ; No consumption of alcohol, drugs, tobacco etc. and ; No adultery or illicit sex. He coined the expression which is widely used by Dera Sacha Sauda “Dhan Dhan Satguru Tera Hi Asra” which means- Blessed are you the true guru, you are my shelter).

After him, Dera Sacha Sauda was led by Shah Satnam Singh from 1960 to 1990. He was succeeded by Gurmeet Ram Rahim in 1990, who added many more ashrams and followers in Dera’s list.

Principles and Teachings of Dera Sacha Sauda

Devotees of Dera are asked to practice No Alcohol, be Vegetarian, marital fidelity and truth. During Satsang, Guru sits beneath Hindu, Sikh, Muslim and Christian symbols depicting him as the union of the symbols.

Dera believes in Humanity as the greatest religion and helps poor, helpless and sicks in best possible manner. No discrimination between rich-poor, inferior-superior are considered. No fees or donations are accepted for meditation that is taught. People are inspired here to follow the path of Prabhu, Paramatma, Ram, Allah, Waheguru and Truth. Almighty is considered the only Truth and method of meditating on Him is taught on Deras.

Dera Sacha Sauda firmly opposes dowry system and other social ills. It is against the unreasonable expenditure incurred in relation to births, deaths and marriages. Here, marriages are conducted in a simple manner by exchanging garlands. Dera believes in earning one’s livelihood only through hard work and correct means. Dera is completely against theft, bribery and corruption. People are taught to be truthful and honest.

According to Dera Sacha Sauda, who so ever meditates on Ram, Allah, Waheguru, God, will be blessed with peace and happiness and soul will attain to salvation.

Vision and Mission

Dera Sacha Sauda visions to conflict-free and peaceful world where self-confidence, spiritual realization and closeness to God are preferred through practicing true meditation. The world will be free of all social evils and women will get their rightful place in society. Also, no discrimination in the society where mankind will think and work to serve fellow human beings and save environment and make a planet a secure place to live.

Aim of Dera Sacha Sauda is to – educate people that God can be found only by meditation and its method should be learned from true master and not with money; spread love and tolerance amongst people of all religion, regions, castes and colour; promote the ill effect of immorality, promiscuity and high risk behaviour; see the world as ONE and addiction free.

Fund source of Dera Sacha Sauda

The word “Dera” refers to “Ashram” and “Sacha Sauda” means “true deal” – which refers that the organization not at all accepts monetary gifts from its devotees. Dera owns extensive lands in various places where it operates supermarkets, petrol pumps, factories, restaurants etc. which are managed by sadhus and its profits are used for the benefit of needy and poor.

Various welfare activities organised by Dera Sacha Sauda

Gurmeet Ram Rahim formed a Disaster relief organization known as Shah Satnam Ji Green-S Welfare Force, having thousands of doctors, engineers, paramedics, rescuers and businessmen who actively took part in providing aid during several natural disasters like Kolkata fire, Gujarat Earthquake, Chennai floods, factory collapse in Jalandhar etc. During flood in Uttarakhand in 2013, volunteers and doctors of Dera provided medical care to people and distributed essential amenities and food to survivors.

Shah Satnam Ji multi-Speciality Hospital having 400 bed was inaugurated by Dera Sacha Sauda’s Gurmeet Ram Rahim in 2014. Dera launched various social welfare campaign and filed a petition in Supreme Court to grant legal status to transgenders. In 2014, judgement came in favour of transgenders that they will now be given the legal status of the third gender.

Dera organized Blood Donation Camps in 2003 and 2004. Dera broke the world record during the mortuary ceremony of Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s father. This event attracted almost 18,000 donors and collected 12,003,000 ml units of blood in a single day. This was recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest amount of blood collected in a day. Mentionable the Dera Sacha Sauda and its chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim both holds around 80 World Records.

Dera Sacha Sauda, a dynamic centre of spirituality for the upliftment of souls, harmonious environment for the distracted souls, encourages people to stay away from alcohol and other addiction, promotes living with dignity and moral values – Dera Sacha Sauda welcomes all to its pure and soothing environment.

Faith of followers over their Convicted leader

Properly framed picture of Dera head Gurmeet Ram Rahim, attired in colourful costume shows the faith of his followers even after two years of his jail. They believe that faith and respect he still commands and deserves. Billboards and hoardings are back at prayer houses of Dera.

According to followers, “The world has always worked to suppress the faithful. The sacrifice of our martyrs will not go in vain”. Another follower says, ‘lord Ram was exiled for 14 years. His subjects remained loyal to Him, so as we will never desert guru who has been framed in false case. Like earlier, the followers assemble at prayer house and pledge to stay united in this tough situation.

PTI in 2017 reported that Gurmeet Ram Rahim was the most supported nomination for Padma Awards. The large population of Haryana and Punjab suffered a lot because of being from Dalit community.  Gurmeet Ram Rahim offered dignity to them. He worked to eradicate caste discrimination. He asked his followers to remove their surnames and replace them with “Insan” pronounced as “Insa” to give them equality. He provided ration, food, education, medical facilities to the poor. This worked him won strong allegiance.
